The Afrikaans Language Monument is located on a hill overlooking Paarl in the Western Cape. It was opened on 10 October 1975 and was built to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the founding of Genootskap van Regte Afrikaners (the Society of Real Afrikaners). The phrase "DIT IS ONS ERNS (we are in earnest)" is inscribed on the pathway leading up to the monument.
