Edge: Plain. Silver Medal stamped: "S 995" and "S.A.M.". All the medals except the gilded bronze medal stamped with an issue number. This silver medal and matt bronze medal: "81".

Obverse: Within a toothed border, coat of arms of Venda with elephant supporters and motto: "SHUMELA VENDA". Signed: "ALS" below left.

Reverse: Within a laurel wreath: "VHUDILANGI / 13.9.1979". Below, gold medal stamped: "G 750" and "S.A.M.". Legend on a wide raised matt band: "RIPHABULIKI YA VENDA". Ornament at the foot.

Notes: The gold, silver and matt bronze medals come as a set in an oblong red case with the coat of arms of Venda and: "VENDA / 13.9.1979" in gold letters on the outside of the lid and lined inside with white silk: "SAM" and red velvet.

The gilded bronze medals come in a square green case with the coat of arms of Venda and: "VENDA / 13.9.1979" in gold letters on the outside of the lid and lined inside with white silk: "SAM" and green velvet.

The Republic of Venda was created under apartheid legislation as a homeland for Venda speaking people in northern South Africa bordering on Zimbabwe. The territory became nominally independent on 13 September 1979 and its president was Patrick Mphephu. It was reincorporated into South Africa in 1994.
