Edge: Plain. Silver medal stamped with the sterling silver mark of the SA Mint and an issue number. This medal: "15".

Obverse: Bareheaded bust of Langenhoven wearing bow tie,left. Signed: “T.S.” below the bust. Facsimile of his signature below: “C.J. Langenhoven”. To the left on a slant: “1873” with a corresponding: “1973” on the right.

Reverse: The emblem of the Federasie van Afrikaanse Kultuurvereniginge (Federation of Afrikaans Cultural Societies), a stylised flame with: “fak” in large letters. Below in an arc: “HANDHAAF EN BOU (maintain and build)".

Notes: Cornelis Jacob Langenhoven was born on 13 August 1873. He was a prominent Afrikaans writer, poet and journalist. His is known as 'die Vader van Afrikaans' for his efforts to establish and gain official acceptance of the language. In 1918 he wrote the words for the national anthem, 'Die Stem van Suid-Afrika'.
