The establishment of the Greek Orthodox Church in Africa can be traced back to the first century AD with the foundation of the Church in Alexandria, Egypt, by St. Mark the Evangelist. The present head of the Church is Theodore II, Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa.

The church in Durban-North is named after: Saint Nicholas of Myra, Saint Andrew the Apostle (probably) and Saint Gerasimos of Kefalonia.
