Obverse: Three seated classically draped figures. On the left female pupil writing on tablet and male pupil with open book. On the right female teacher. Above on right, imposing pillared building: "WETENSCHAP (science)". In front of building on plinth, book; "BIBLIA (Bible)", lamp of learning above. A male angle flying above to the right, left hand holding palm frond, right hand pointing to Bible. On the horizon, radiant sun. Signed, bottom left on step: "FADDEGON SC".

Reverse: Beaded border round the rim. At the top the coat of arms of the Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek. On an ornate shield below: "HET.TAALFONDS. / HEEFT.AAN. (the Language Fund has on)". A rectangular plaque below for engraving. Below that: "DEZEN.PENNING.TOE- / GEKEND.VOOR.VOR- / DERINGEN.IN.DE- / HOLLANDSCHE. / TAAL. (conferred this medal for advancement in the Dutch language)". The left and right of the shield draped with knotted material. Below, palm frond (left), olive branch (right). Letter: "F" at right rim.

Notes: The Nederlands-Zuid-Afrikaanse Vereniging (NZAV) was founded in Utrecht on 12 May 1881 as a result of Dutch outrage over the British annexation of ZAR in 1887 and to offer support thereafter for the country's cultural independence.

This medal was commissioned by the NZAV as part of their efforts to sustain education in the Dutch language within in their broader cultural aims in the fields of education, science and literature.

The NZAV still exists and actively promotes the cultural ties between South Africa and the Netherlands.It is located in the South Africa House on the Keizersgracht in Amsterdam.

Johan Melchior Faddegon (1871-1941) was a Dutch-French sculptor and medalist.
