Edge: Plain. Stamped with the emblem of the Rijks Munt in an oval.

Obverse: Bareheaded bust of Greshoff wearing spectacles in jacket and tie, half right. Legend in large letters: "J. GRESHOFF ÆT. LX-1948".

Reverse: Pegasus, winged horse, flying left. Below in large letters, in an arc: "IK BEN ELDERS (I am elsewhere)". Below that sculptor's monogram : "GR".

Notes: Jan Greshoff (1888-1971) was a Dutch journalist, poet, and literary critic. He spent the latter part of his life in Cape Town.

The medal was commissioned by friend and relatives in his home country to pay tribute to Greshoff on his 60th birthday in 1948. The website https://www.grarueb.nl/index.html records that because of technical and financial difficulties the issue was delayed until the following year. One medal was made in silver and 65 in bronze.
