Edge: Plain.

Obverse: Veiled and diademed bust of Queen Victoria, left. Half laurel wreath below. Legend on a raised band above: “TO COMMEMORATE THE 60TH YEAR OF REIGN OF H.G.M. QUEEN VICTORIA” and below between stops: “1837 – 1897”

Reverse: The coat of arms of Grey Institute. In an arc above: “GREY INSTITUTE” within a curved line above the text. In an arc below: “PORT ELIZABETH” within a curved line below the text. The design is enclosed within two half laurel wreaths one above and the other below. To the left and right: “VRI” monogram surmounted by a crown.

Notes: The pressed medal suspension badge shows the Royal coat of arms with six flag standards behind.

The Grey Institute was a school built in 1859 on land granted by the governor of the Cape Colony, Sir George Grey. The school moved to larger premises in 1915 but the building has been restored and is now a national monument and houses partly the Greenwood Primary School.
