Edge: Plain.

Obverse: Legend on raised garter surround: "DURBAN-PIETERMARITZBURG". On inner shield: "INTERTOWN / RIFFLE MATCH / AUG. 24TH. / 1895".

Reverse: Blank. Stamped with the makers mark: "C.E.S" and the Birmingham sterlomg silver hallmarks for 1893-4 (t).

Notes: The raised garter is a separate piece bonded to the cut-out back plate.

The Pietermaritzburg Rifle Association was founded in 1892 but shooting matches between the two towns had taken place before that date.
