Edge: Plain.

Obverse: Hand emerging from a cloud, top right, pouring oil from a pitcher into a burning lamp of classical design. Legend on a band above: "HUMANE SOCIETY, CAPE OF GOOD HOPE" and below between stops: "1842".

Reverse: Wreath of oak (left) and laurel (right) tied at the bottom with a ribbon enclosing space for engraving. Signed below: "W.W. 27. STRAND.". This medal unengraved or engraving erased.

Notes: The suspension is missing from this medal. Correctly, an attached boss for a ring to a corded blue ribbon.

Nothing is known about this early Cape lifesaving society.
