Commissioned by the South African Chamber Chamber of Mines for presentation to the delegates attending the 12tn Non-Aligned Movement Summit held in the Durban Conference Centre between 29th August and 3rd September 1998. President Mandela was the secretary-general of NAM (1998-1999).

The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) is a group of states that are not formally aligned with or against any major power bloc. About 120 delegates attended the summit and it is presument that each was presented with one of these medals.

It is believed that this medal was presented to the delegate from Cyprus. Cyprus was a member of NAM in 1998 but left in 2004 when the country joined the EU.
