The recipient of this medal was probably Dr. John Innes Brownlee, a South African born medical doctor and graduate of Glasgow University. Dr Brownlee was the grandson of the Reverend John Brownlee (1791-1871), a Scottish missionary, who in 1825 founded a mission station which later became the site of King Williams Town. Rev. Brownlee was himself a botanist and collected many flora of the region which became the foundation of the Town's the Botanical Garden.
