Edge: Plain.

Obverse: Ornately decorated with edge following design. At top six flags divided by King's crown. On a ribbon below: "CAPE COLONY NATIONAL RIFLE ASSOCIATION". Below that, the Cape Colony coat of arms with female herald supporters. To the left and right Zulu shield and spears above crossed rifles. Further down, within an oval wreath, a shooting range scene. At the bottom on a cartouche: "INTER COLONIAL / GRAND / CHALLENGE SHIELD".

Reverse: Reverse impression

Notes: Intended for mounting on a wooden back. Also found in hallmarked silver and copper.
