Two versions of the medal exist. In what appears to be the earlier version, the obverse design extends to the rim. In the later version the overall design is smaller and a loop has been attached. There are also differences in the details of the design.
Somerset Hospital is situated in the Green Point area of Cape Town. The cornerstone for the hospital was laid on 18 August 1859 by the Cape Governor, Sir George Grey. It has now been declared a national monument.
